Watching the trailer of We Bought a Zoo, you’ll immediately see the fun and jovial nature in this movie adaptation of Benjamin Mee’s memoir – a film which will be a “must see” for families looking for a Christmas movie everyone can agree on.
In the film, Benjamin Mee, played by Matt Damon, buys a dilapidated zoo in the countryside with the hope of bringing his family closer together after he leaves his hectic work-filled life as a single dad in the city. Ben and his young son, and four-year-old daughter begin to rebuild their family ties as they work to revitalize the zoo and the over 47 animal species in it.
Along this journey, help – and a love interest – comes in the form of one of the other zoo workers, Kelly Foster (played by Scarlett Johansson) who informs Ben that unless he steps up and gives revitalizing the zoo his all – all of the animals will be gone. The film is not only enjoyable to children of all ages who have ever had the crazy dream of living side by side with wild animals, but also for adults, as it drives home the message of never giving up on your dreams or your desire for a better life – no matter what age you are.
Cameron Crowe directs the film, and its inherent humor makes it perfect for all ages. Though there are sad parts surrounding the grief from losing a loved one, We Bought a Zoo is predominantly a very uplifting movie that shows how far the strength of families can go.
