Set in 19th century France, Les Miserables is an epic story of persecution and protest, love and passion, broken dreams and sacrifice. Ex-prisoner Jean Valjean (Hugh Jackman) has been hunted for decades by Javert (Russell Crowe), a ruthless police inspector. His crime? Stealing bread, and then later breaking parole.
Now Valjean has risen to the post of mayor in a French town. When he agreed to care for Cosette (Isabelle Allen as the young child, Amanda Seyfried as the teen), the illegitimate daughter of Fantine (Anne Hathaway), a struggling factory worker who is eventually forced to turn to prostitution, their lives all changed forever.
Les Miserables is a musical film based on the wildly popular and very long-running stage musical of the same name, which in turn was based on an 1862 French novel by Victor Hugo. Directed by Academy Award®-winning director Tom Hooper (The King’s Speech), the movie is set for release onDecember 14, 2012by Universal Pictures. William Nicholson, Alain Boublil, Claude-Michel Schönberg and Herbert Kretzmer co-wrote the screenplay.
