Nymphomaniac

Following Antichrist and Melancholia, Nymphomaniac forms the final part of Lars von Trier’s “trilogy of depression.” “The movie is what you think it is,” explains actor Shia LeBeouf. “There’s a disclaimer at the top of the script that basically says we’re doing it for real.” Featuring unsimulated sex acts and other stunts, Nymphomaniac pushes the envelope of what’s accepted in modern cinema.

Man On A Ledge

Man on a Ledge,
a 2012 psychological-thriller film, depicts the story of a man on a mission who after a dizzying series of events, ends up on top of a ledge.  Starring Sam Worthington, Elizabeth Banks, Jamie Bell and Ed Harris, Man on a Ledge has a plot that leaves you on the edge of your seat.

Set in New York City, Nick Cassidy (Sam Worthington) checks into the Roosevelt hotel, goes straight up to his room, and positions himself on the ledge of his hotel balcony, attempting to set to stage for his eventual suicide.  Once a women spots him, the police are called and a special, female negotiator Lydia Mercer (Elizabeth Banks) is called.

Having failed to convince a depressed man from jumping from the Brooklyn Bridge a few months earlier, Cassidy specifically asked for Mercer to be appointed to his case.  Once reaching his room, Mercer discovers he is an ex-cop accused of stealing a priceless diamond.  Unbeknownst to Mercer, while he is on the ledge, people elsewhere are attempting to proclaim his innocence.

Directed by Asger Leth, Man on a Ledge has received mixed reviews while audiences worldwide met the film with most positive reviews as it performed well at the box-office.  Any movie that can capture the attention of views with a plot that centers around a man on a ledge has to be doing something right.

The Adventures of Tintin – The Secret of the Unicorn; A Steven Spielberg Film

The Adventures of Tintin: The Secret of the Unicorn, is the first film adaptation of the world famous comic of the same name by Belgian artist Herge (Georges Remi), and is also the latest project by legendary writer, director and producer, Steven Spielberg.

The film begins in quaint 1930’s Brussels, where Tintin, an intrepid young Belgian reporter, voiced by actor Jamie Bell, stumbles upon an antique ship in an outdoor market with the image of a unicorn as the mast. The merchant informs Tintin that the rare three-masted ship is the mightiest ship that has ever sailed the seven seas. Feeling that the ship truly is something special, Tintin is compelled to purchase the model at once.  His life immediately takes a drastic turn toward adventure, when the sinister Ivan Ivanovitch Sakharine, voiced by Daniel Craig, immediately sets his sights on Tintin and begins pursuing him to acquire the ship for himself.

Tintin realizes the importance of the ship when it breaks during a fight between his beloved dog Snowy and a neighbor cat.  Amidst the pieces, he finds a secret scroll that gives him clues for finding one of the world’s most famous ancient treasures. However, Tintin is not alone in this knowledge of the scroll, and an unseemly slew of treasure seekers stops at nothing to acquire the ship, the scroll, and, ultimately, the treasure for themselves.

The film takes family fun adventure to a new level as the story ranges from the high-seas to the deserts of Morocco.  It is filled with villains, thieves, and even 17th century pirates in search of the other two model ships, which contain the final clues to the treasure.  Everything is filmed with motion capture technology, which bridges the gap between animation and life action film.

The Adventures of Tintin will join the ranks of other famous films by Spielberg such as; Saving Private Ryan, Schindler’s List, and another film recently reviewed on this blog- War Horse.

While critics abroad, where the film has already opened, are claiming that the film adaptation does not exactly live up to the comic in story or even graphics, the film promises to be an excellent holiday film for all ages and a fantastic introduction to the Adventures of Tintin to the masses.
